Crisis PR & Communications for the Alcohol Industry

Crisis PR and factual communications for alcohol businesses in the UK and selected international markets, subject to local laws.

The commission

What the work covers

Develop and coordinate factual crisis communications for alcohol brands, producers, distributors and industry organisations in the UK and selected international markets, subject to applicable local laws. Work can cover incident response plans, holding statements, media enquiries, customer and employee updates, trade partner communications and spokesperson briefings. Work with the client's legal, safety and operational advisers to distinguish confirmed facts from uncertainty, set approval responsibilities and agree update schedules. Review the communications response after the incident to improve future preparation.

How we approach the work

  1. Agree the issue, countries, audiences, response hours, approval owners and escalation responsibilities.
  2. Review confirmed facts, uncertainties and specialist advice, then prepare response materials without delaying required safety actions or notifications.
  3. Coordinate approved communications, record enquiries and decisions, update materials as facts change and review the response.

Scope and boundaries

Communications are subject to applicable local laws, accuracy, privacy and confidentiality requirements. Approval processes must not delay urgent safety action, recalls, required warnings or statutory reporting. Clients and their appointed specialists handle legal, safety and regulatory decisions and official filings; each party retains its own obligations. Public-authority representation and political influence campaigns are outside this service. Response hours and publishing authority are agreed in the brief; media coverage and reputational outcomes are not guaranteed. Media relations exclude harassment or intimidation, buying favourable independent editorial coverage and suppressing legitimate reporting. Correction requests identify factual concerns and do not promise the removal of criticism.

Scope and independence

Lobbying and representation before public authorities are delivered directly by Alcohol Ltd within the UK and only in relation to UK public bodies. We do not undertake or arrange lobbying of foreign governments, legislatures, regulators or international public bodies, directly, remotely or through intermediaries.

International work covers research, commercial analysis, media, publishing and private-sector trade event support. It excludes campaigns to influence non-UK public decisions, representation to non-UK public authorities and arranging others to provide those services.

Commercial campaigns are reviewed for applicable advertising, audience, territory and claims rules; a trade audience is not a blanket exemption from alcohol advertising restrictions. Media bookings and event suppliers need agreed budgets, permissions and proportionate anti-bribery controls. Event representation covers approved information-only presentations and commercial discussions. It excludes offering or exposing alcohol for wholesale sale, sales negotiation, order-taking, supply and arranging wholesale sales. Event agendas and facilitated discussions exclude exchanges of competitors' non-public pricing intentions, output plans and commercial strategies.

Client approval concerns commissioned deliverables and factual checks. Editors retain responsibility for independent publication, corrections and removal decisions. A commercial commission does not buy favourable independent coverage, the suppression of legitimate reporting, editorial endorsement or control over our policy positions. Confidential journalistic sources are not made available through commercial client approval.

Our regulated editorial material follows the Editors' Code of Practice, including accuracy, distinguishing fact from opinion and conjecture, privacy and timely corrections with due prominence. IPSO regulates editorial material within its remit; it does not approve our consultancy, research, PR or lobbying services. Advertising is clearly identified where applicable.

Appointments require an agreed written brief and checks on the client, conflicts, sanctions and any applicable registration, disclosure, data-use and permission requirements before work begins. Scope, fees and responsibilities are agreed separately, subject to our service and jurisdictional terms.
